How to cancel Planet Fitness membership (2026 guide).

The structural trap: friction over price-jump

Planet Fitness's monthly $24.99 is constant and clearly advertised; it does not jump. The trap is structural: the $49 annual enhancement fee (raised from $39 in 2024) is disclosed in the membership agreement but rarely prominently advertised. It hits on or around the 60-day anniversary of signup and yearly thereafter. Many members process the $24.99 as the only recurring charge and are surprised by the $49.

The second part of the trap is cancellation friction. Planet Fitness does not offer online cancellation in most markets, citing "verification." You must cancel in person at your home club or by certified mail with return receipt. Cancellation methods

Method 1: In person at your home club

1. Identify your home club via the PF mobile app or your membership agreement.
2. Visit during staffed hours (typically 9am to 9pm; check your specific club).
3. Bring photo ID. Ask the front desk for a cancellation request form.
4. Complete the form, including your reason. Reason is not enforceable but the form requires it.
5. Request a signed copy of the cancellation request as your proof. Photograph it on the spot.
6. Most clubs process same-day. You will receive a final confirmation email within 7 to 14 days.

Method 2: Certified mail to your home club

1. Use template B (certified letter cancellation) on our cancel-and-resign page.
2. Address it to your specific home club (not the corporate office). The address is on your membership agreement.
3. Send certified mail with return receipt at the USPS counter, not in a drop box. Keep the green return-receipt card.
4. Allow 7 to 10 business days for delivery. The cancellation is effective when the certified mail is received, not posted.

Timing: avoid the annual fee

The $49 annual fee is billed on or around the 60-day anniversary of your signup. If you signed up on January 1, expect the annual fee on or around March 1, then yearly each March.

Cancel at least 30 days before the next annual fee date. Allow another 5 to 7 days for certified-mail delivery if using method 2. Practical rule: cancel 35 to 40 days before the fee anniversary. If you are already past the fee, the next opportunity is 30 days before the next anniversary one year later (you cannot recover the just-paid fee, but you can avoid paying again).

If you are charged after cancellation

If you have a signed cancellation request or a certified-mail return receipt and you are still charged, contact your home club first with the proof. If unresolved within 14 days, dispute the charge with your card issuer using the cancelled-services reason code (Visa 13.7, Mastercard 4853). The signed cancellation form or certified-mail return receipt is strong dispute evidence.

Alternatives

Anytime Fitness and Crunch Fitness offer comparable basic memberships at $20 to $30 per month, often without an annual fee. Local YMCA is community-priced and often $25 to $50 per month for sliding-scale plans. Bodyweight and home dumbbell routines with an Apple Fitness Plus ($9.99 per month) or YouTube subscription cover most general fitness goals at a fraction of the gym cost. Calculate whether your gym attendance pattern justifies the membership rather than defaulting to a renewal.
